In 1546 the discovery of a silver vein at the foot of the Hill of La Bufa signaled the beginning of the region's colonization. On September 8 of that same year, the city of Zacatecas was founded under the protection of the Virgin of Patronage. Through a sister city agreement signed by several Mexican World Heritage Cities, Guanajuato and Zacatecas established a commitment to peace, harmony and democracy, and to stimulate among their citizens a culture of social participation, affection, collaboration and trust that is achieved through friendly relations; this concept is the inherent source of civilization, progress and prosperity.

Zacatecas and Guanajuato have been sister cities since August 16, 1996.
